6 Essential Tips to Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter in Denver

With winter on the horizon and temperatures beginning to drop, preparing your vehicle for the challenges of the colder months is essential. At Hail Medic, we recognize the significance of protecting your vehicle from hail damage and other weather-related concerns. Our team recommends six tips to help you get your vehicle ready for winter and keep it in peak condition.

1. Inspect and Maintain Tires

Driving conditions throughout Colorado can change rapidly in winter, so vehicles need well-maintained tires. The Colorado Department of Transportation requires all cars to have designated snow tires, mud and snow tires, or four-wheel or all-wheel drive transmissions. Winter tires provide better traction and handling in cold weather conditions. Moreover, all tires must have a minimum tread depth of three-sixteenths of an inch.

2. Check Your Battery

Cold weather can brutally affect battery performance. Ensure your battery is in good condition and fully charged. The American Automobile Association recommends that batteries be inspected at every oil change to ensure sound interior connections and hardware. Moreover, AAA recommends batteries over three years old be tested annually to avoid spontaneous failure.

3. Hail Damage Protection

Although less common than in the summer, hailstorms can still occur during Denver's winter, often resulting in substantial damage to vehicles across Colorado. Take precautions to protect your car from hail damage.

Car Cover: Use a high-quality car cover to withstand hail, providing an extra layer of protection.
Garage Parking: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in a garage or covered area to shield it from hail.
• Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts and be prepared to move your vehicle to a safer location if hail is predicted.

4. Winterize Your Vehicle

Winterizing your vehicle involves several steps to ensure it runs smoothly in cold weather.

• Check Fluids: Ensure all fluids, including antifreeze, oil, and windshield washer fluid, are at appropriate levels and suitable for winter conditions.
• Inspect Wiper Blades and Lights: Replace worn-out wiper blades and ensure all lights function correctly. Visibility is crucial during winter storms.
• Test Heater and Defroster: Ensure your car's heater and defroster are working properly to keep you warm and maintain clear windows.

5. Prepare a Vehicle Emergency Kit

Winter weather can be unpredictable, so it's wise to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle as an extra precaution. In an article for Family Handyman, Jenny Stanley recommends a variety of items for a car survival kit:

• Candle-powered heater
• Flashlight
• Cellphone charger
• Notepad and pen/pencil
• Small toolkit
• Cat litter or floor sweep absorbent (for traction)
• Jumper cables
• Small shovel
• Fix-A-Flat
• First aid kit
• Warm Clothing
• Blanket

6. Regular Maintenance Checks

Regular maintenance is vital to keeping your vehicle in good condition throughout the winter. Schedule a comprehensive check-up with your mechanic to address any potential issues before they become significant problems.
